Perimenopause Foods to Avoid (and What to Eat Instead)

No food is truly forbidden in perimenopause, but a few make the symptoms worse for many women: too much caffeine and alcohol (sleep and hot flashes), a lot of added sugar and refined carbs (energy crashes and mood), and heavy salt (bloating). You do not have to be perfect — just notice which ones are working against you.

The usual culprits

Caffeine

Your tolerance often drops in your 40s. Too much, or too late in the day, disrupts sleep and can trigger hot flashes and palpitations. Try pulling your last cup earlier.

Alcohol

Especially the evening wine that helps you fall asleep and then wakes you at 3am. It also triggers hot flashes for many women.

Added sugar and refined carbs

They spike and crash your blood sugar, worsening energy and mood, and make weight harder to manage.

Excess salt

Feeds the water retention behind perimenopause bloating. See perimenopause bloating.

This is about noticing patterns, not banning foods. Track your triggers for a week — the connections are usually clear, and small changes help more than a strict diet.

What to lean into instead

Protein, fiber, and steady meals — the additions that actually help, covered in our perimenopause diet guide and best foods to eat.

The bottom line

Cut back on the caffeine, alcohol, sugar and salt that fight your symptoms — you do not have to eliminate them, just notice them. More in the nutrition guide.
