Why it is harder now
As estrogen falls, your body stores more fat around the middle and loses muscle a little each year. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, so the same eating and moving that used to hold your weight stops working. Broken sleep makes it worse by raising the hormones that drive appetite. It is physiology, not a willpower failure.
What actually works
- Protein first. It protects muscle and keeps you full. The biggest single lever.
- Strength training. Builds back the muscle that keeps your metabolism up — more effective than endless cardio here.
- Sleep. Fix this and appetite hormones settle. It does more than any food swap.
- Manage stress. Chronically high cortisol encourages belly-fat storage.
What does not work
Crash diets (they cost you muscle), and “menopause belly” fat-burner pills. No supplement burns fat — some help sleep and stress, which indirectly helps, and that is the honest limit, as we explain in supplements for weight gain.
The bottom line
Protein, strength, sleep, stress — that is the real perimenopause weight toolkit, and it works with your biology instead of fighting it. More on the why in perimenopause weight gain.
